Explanatory Film

The Challenge

VOCO developed a new intraoral 3D scanner with a unique technological advantage: unlike conventional surface scanners, this device is capable of scanning not only the visible tooth geometry but also the underlying bone structure — capturing measurement points beneath the gum tissue using the same laser passes.

The challenge was to explain this complex technology clearly to both dental professionals and end users. The internal mechanics of laser interferometry — invisible during normal use — had to be made visible, intuitive, and scientifically accurate. At the same time, the film needed to feel premium and trustworthy, reflecting the product's positioning in the medical market.

Our Approach

We produced a hybrid explanatory image film that combines detailed 3D animation with real live-action footage shot in an actual dental practice. The 3D sequences visualize how the scanner emits laser beams via a mirror into the oral cavity, and how an interferometer measures the precise time difference between emission and return — converting those micro-intervals into an accurate 3D model of the mouth geometry.

A particular focus was the visualization of the scanner's sub-gingival capability: we animated how a portion of the laser light passes through the gum tissue — similar to how light partially penetrates soft tissue — allowing the device to record depth measurements and capture bone geometry in addition to the tooth surface.

The live-action sequences were filmed in a real dental practice with professional actors. Pre-production and on-set direction for the film portion was handled by Andreas Wanner, our long-term partner for film productions, who has been involved in several of our hybrid projects. The 3D animation and live footage were then seamlessly composited into a single coherent film.

The Result

A polished explanatory image film that makes the invisible science of laser interferometry tangible — clearly communicating what sets the VOCO scanner apart from conventional intraoral devices. The hybrid format gives the film both technical credibility and an authentic, human feel.
